Background: Low anterior resection syndrome (LARS) is a common yet under-recognized complication following rectal cancer surgery. Its management remains inconsistent due to variations in clinical experience, institutional protocols, and available resources. This study aims to assess the experiences, practices, and challenges faced by Irish colorectal surgeons and trainees in managing LARS.

Methods: A comprehensive survey was distributed to colorectal surgeons and trainees across academic, regional, and private practice settings in Ireland. Participants provided data on clinical experience, and insights into their use of patient-reported outcome measures, primary management strategies, and referral practices. The survey also explored barriers to effective management and perceived needs for further training or resources.

Results: Preliminary findings indicate significant variation in the frequency of LARS assessment and management strategies. While dietary modifications, pharmacological interventions, and pelvic floor rehabilitation are commonly recommended, their perceived effectiveness varies. Notably, there is a lack of standardized pathways for LARS management in many institutions. Participants highlighted challenges such as limited treatment options, inadequate patient education, and communication barriers within multidisciplinary teams. We await full results prior to formal analysis.

Conclusions: This survey underscores the need for standardized management protocols and enhanced education on LARS. Insights from this study will inform the development of targeted interventions to improve outcomes for patients and support clinicians in their practice.
