Background: Haemostasis during thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy surgery is critical. The optimal technique to achieve this remains unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate our novel haemostasis technique using the combination of Hemopatch™ and LigaSure™ in all patients undergoing thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy at Cork University Hospital.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis of a prospectively maintained data base for all patients undergoing thyroidectomy and parathyroidectomy surgery between August 2021 and August 2023 at Cork University Hospital. Data were obtained with the aid of hospital in-patient enquiry (HIPE) data, radiology repository, and documentation of day-6 post-operative wound review. The primary outcome was haematoma and seroma formation. Secondary endpoints were associated morbidity including length of hospital stay, wound infection and hypocalcemia rates.

Results: A total of 171 patients underwent elective thyroid and/or parathyroid surgery over the 2-year period. None of the patients had documented evidence of haematoma formation, while only 1 patient (0.58%) had a seroma. The average length of hospital stay was 1 day. A total of 2 patients (1.16%) had developed wound infection while hypocalcemia had been observed in 3 patients (1.75%) post-operatively.

Conclusions: Our study demonstrates the effectiveness and safety of our haemostatic technique using Hemopatch™ and LigaSure™ in thyroid and parathyroid surgery which has to the best of our knowledge not been previously described in the literature.
