Background: Patients with urological pathologies are commonly admitted under acute general surgical services in level 3 hospitals.

Methods: Retrospective cohort study of all urological admissions to St. Lukes General Hospital between 01/07/2023 and 31/10/2023. Statistics were analysed using SPSS.

Results: The total number of admissions in the general surgical service was 867, out of which the total number of urological admissions was 100 which is 11.53%. The 100 cases were divided into individual months as July n=19 (average 1.46/day), August n=50 (average 1.61/day), and September n=31 (average 1.34/day). Data for some days are not available, which are reflected in taking less than the full number of days of that specific month when calculating the averages. The average length of stay of urological patients over the duration of this study was 2.94 days, of which the highest was for hematuria (4.85 days). The number of cases per presentation was nephrolithiasis 43, scrotal pain 15, hematuria 13, urinary retention 9, scrotal swelling 6, urinary tract infection 6, ureteric colic 4, phimosis 2, testicular trauma 1 and balanitis 1.

Conclusions: The presentation of urological cases puts a significant burden on the general surgical services at our acute level three hospital with limited resources.

Keywords: Acute level 3; burden; general surgery; nephrolithiasis; urology
