Background: Transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) biopsy is the gold standard for diagnosing prostate cancer, but it is associated with serious complications such as urosepsis. To avoid this complication, many precautions are taken, including the use of Instillagel before the procedure. The aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of Instillagel mixed with Betadine solution in preventing urosepsis during TRUS biopsy.

Methods: The audit collected data from more than 55 cases that underwent TRUS biopsy in Nenagh Hospital over the last 6 months. The data was analysed to determine the incidence of urosepsis or hospital admission after the procedure.

Results: The audit found zero cases of urosepsis or hospital admission after TRUS biopsy in Nenagh Hospital over the last 6 months. This result is excellent compared to the incidence of urosepsis reported in the literature.

Conclusions: Based on the results of this audit, we believe that Instillagel mixed with Betadine solution is effective in preventing urosepsis and decreasing rectal pain during TRUS biopsy. We recommend the standardization of the technique to ensure its safe and effective use in all TRUS biopsy procedures. Overall, the audit shows that the use of Instillagel mixed with Betadine solution before TRUS biopsy can significantly reduce the incidence of urosepsis and other complications associated with the procedure. This finding is consistent with previous studies that have shown the effectiveness of Instillagel mixed with Betadine solution in reducing the risk of infection during TRUS biopsy. The audit highlights the importance of taking precautions to prevent complications during TRUS biopsy and the need for standardization of the technique to ensure its safe and effective use.
