Background: Transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP) is a common surgical procedure used to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, the quality of TURP surgical videos on YouTube is generally low, and higher educational quality videos with detailed explanations of the procedure are needed. Our team at the urology department in Limerick University Hospital has specialized training in minimally invasive prostate procedures like TURP, which offers fewer complications than traditional surgery and a faster recovery time.

Methods: The steps involved in TURP include preoperative evaluation, anaesthesia, positioning, cystoscopy, resection, and postoperative care. A video presentation with voice explanation can be used to show the steps involved in TURP and provide a visual aid for trainees to follow along with. This can help ensure that the technique is standardized and that trainees are performing the procedure correctly.

Results: The video can demonstrate the proper technique for each step, including the use of a resectoscope to remove the prostate tissue, and provide tips and tricks to minimize complications.

Conclusions: A video presentation for a standard step-by-step safe technique for TURP is an effective way to train registrars in the urology department. The use of a resectoscope and other specialized equipment can help ensure safe and effective prostate tissue removal. The procedure can be divided into several critical steps, and a video presentation with voice explanation can be used to help trainees learn the proper technique. This can help ensure that the technique is standardized and that trainees are performing the procedure correctly, leading to better patient outcomes.
