Background: Audit of nursing documentation found that standards on pain assessment were not being met when measured against national quality care metrics. Face-to-face supportive education was impacting on staff and clinical nurse specialist (CNS) workload. Further education was needed to support nursing staff of the 12 identified units. The aim of the study was to identify the effectiveness of the delivery of supportive pain assessment education utilizing a digital platform in the hospital setting.

Methods: Voiceover lectures were recorded on 5 brief PowerPoint presentations and forwarded via WhatsApp to the clinical nurse manager 2 (CNM2) of each participating unit. Presentations were subsequently forwarded to the group chat of each unit on a Monday to Friday basis by the CNM2. A Survey Monkey link was then provided to identify staff opinion on the new approach. The time frame from planning to completion was 3 weeks.

Results: A total of 231 staff of a possible 234 accessed all 5 lectures in the 5-day period. Eighty-four (36.4%) completed the post education survey; 97.5% of participants found digital delivery of education very beneficial. Fifty percent identified that they are very likely to change practice based on education received; 98% of staff requested further education using this form of delivery.

Conclusions: Utilizing a digital platform for education delivery provided the opportunity to overcome barriers created by face-to-face methods. Such an approach supports individuals need for education while reducing the potential impact on the user’s workload. Education delivered at a time and in a time when needed.
