Background: A healthy, sound and informed medical team is ideal in treating and managing their patients. Long stressful shifts may often lead to clinical errors. To combat such errors, a trial of “Secured Handover Sheet” (SHS) system was introduced, in South Tipperary General Hospital (2018) and Naas General Hospital (2020). SHS is a communication tool which complies with guidelines of General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) and European Union Safety Agenda (EUSA) and results have shown better patient management, minimising the clinical risks, minimal over time breech of non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs), and also cost effective.

Methods: A total of 3 studies were conducted to check: work experience of the medical team with SHS. Total of 26 doctors took part in this survey, working hours of a medical doctor in respect to European Union Working Directives (EUWD) and percentage of blood tests per patient per admission. Total 1,025 patients data was included in this study.

Results: NCHDs strongly agree that SHS provides clear information of patient and brings team to a common platform, which ease the communication with other sub-specialities and minimizes clinical errors. On average 15% decrease in over-time shift, hence complying with EUWD policy. Laboratory data showed about 11–20% decrease in blood test request, proving SHS’s cost-effectiveness.

Conclusions: Handover sheet is an effective communication tool which provides transfer of high-quality clinical information for patients, better patient management, minimising the clinical risks, minimal over time breech of NCHDs.
