Background: The presentation and discussion of colorectal cancer (CRC) cases at a multidisciplinary conference (MDC) is now a required standard at all hospitals. The aim of this study was to see if the MDC changed the management of CRC cases when presented and discussed at such meeting.

Methods: All first time CRC cases presented at a twice monthly MDC by a single colorectal surgeon were prospectively studied over an 18-month period. The presenting surgeon completed a written proforma prior to the meeting and duly completed it following the meeting outlining any changes in management.

Results: Fifty consecutive first presentations of CRC over an 18-month period were studied. Two patients had anastomotic leaks requiring re-operation. No post-operative deaths occurred. There was no documented change in management plan as a result of the MDC.

Conclusions: This study suggests that no documented change in plan occurred following presentation of first line CRC cases at a specialist MDC by an experienced colorectal surgeon. However, MDC does facilitate transparent discussion of cases which ensures that the highest standards of practice are being adhered to by participants at the MDC. It also plays a role in providing important feedback to patients and family members.
