AB005. SOH26AB_0340. Step-by-step scrotal exploration and bilateral orchidopexy: a teaching video
Abstract
Testicular torsion is a time-critical urological emergency due to its incidence in the younger male population. The most common presentation is an adolescent male between 12 and 18 years old with severe sudden-onset right testicular pain with a tender, swollen, high riding testes on examination. The aim of this video is to demonstrate a safe, step-by-step technique for scrotal exploration and bilateral orchidopexy for training urologists. The video outlines each stage of the procedure, beginning with preparation and draping. A median raphe incision is made, followed by exploration of the affected testis. Detorsion and assessment of the viability of the testes is extensively performed, after which a subdartos pouch is surgically created, and orchidopexy is then completed using a two-point fixation technique. The contralateral side is also fixed for prophylaxis. The procedure concludes with layered closure of the scrotal wound. Bilateral orchidopexy was successfully performed. The patient made an uneventful postoperative recovery and was discharged home the following day. Scrotal exploration and orchidopexy are essential procedures for all urologists to perform safely and confidently. High-quality teaching materials, including step-by-step videos, are valuable tools for improving surgical training and ensuring timely management of testicular torsion to improve patient outcomes.
