Background: Understanding the patterns and predictors of local breast cancer recurrence is crucial for enhancing patient care and tailoring follow-up strategies. This institutional review aims to identify trends in local recurrence and significant predictive factors within a defined patient population.

Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted involving women diagnosed and treated for primary breast cancer at University Hospital Limerick from January 2010 to December 2023. Inclusion criteria included patients aged 18 years and older, diagnosed with stage I–III breast cancer, and having completed initial treatment. Data collection encompassed patient demographics, tumour characteristics, and location of recurrence. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis was used to estimate time to local recurrence, while Cox proportional hazards models were employed to identify significant predictors.

Results: A total of 2,892 cases were treated over a period of 14 years with 141 recurrence and 78 with metastasis. Subgroup analysis will help in determining pattern and predictor factors.

Conclusions: This review underscores that tumour characteristics and surgical margin status are pivotal in predicting local breast cancer recurrence. The study supports implementing risk-adjusted follow-up schedules and further research to optimize management strategies.
